Environmental Assessments and Workshops

.

Emma Carlson associated with the Environmental Science Programme, at the
University of Linköping, Sweden has recently been in India on an internship with MESH to conduct environment workshops and environmental assessments with seven of MESH supplier groups and MESH as well.

Emma prepared a PowerPoint presentation, presentation notes and a poster for each group which we had translated into Hindi making the workshops more relevant for artisans in the northern Hindi-speaking belt.

At each workshop the participants were encouraged to think about their production processes and identify where they might be making an impact on the environment. Then in two groups, participants were asked to list ways in which they could be more environmentally friendly at work and at home. The results were targets for each work place and lots of stimulating discussion. The target lists written out poster size are displayed in each unit.

Emma brought samples of different kinds of rubbish and asked us to guess how long it takes to be destroyed. The most shocking was polystyrene which will probably never decompose!
