The members of Care Kashmir are practicing the traditional craft of papier-mâché which is both making the shape and hand painting it. Each craftsman is an artist, as all the painting is done freehand.



Papier-mâché painting is a traditional craft in Kashmir. The artisans of Care Kashmir paint the beauty of their natural surroundings into boxes, trays, and Christmas decorations. In more recent times they have also begun to use their painting skills on steel jugs and cups and cutlery allowing them to reach a bigger market.

In the cold days of winter thousands of hand painted products may be laid out before gas heaters to dry in the frigid air each one a testimony to the skills of the artists.
