Fair Wage Project

About The Fair Wage Project

What is a Fair Wage?
A Fair Wage should provide an adequate income to lift artisans out of poverty and provide sustainable development.
A Fair Wage should provide:
• Food
• Shelter
• Clothing
• Health care
• Education
• Savings

Does a Fair Wage alone guarantee an adequate income?
No.
Often artisans have to take high interest loans to afford Health care, Education and Savings.
For example: If a child has to go to hospital the family will have to spend 60% of their annual income at one time.

How can we calculate a Fair Wage?
World of Good Development Organisation has created a Fair Trade Wage Guide (FTWG) as a tool for craft artisans to enter their wage details and measure them against both national and international poverty parameters. Artisans can calculate a Fair Wage based on the results.

Those artisans who are interested are visited by two MESH field workers to help:
  • Analyse present wage rates using the FTWG
  • Identify better wage rates
  • Test revised wages using the FTWG
  • Suggest additional benefits such as health insurance & provident fund
The Fair Wages Project will continue with field visits to all the producer groups to promote the use of the FTWG and to offer practical support to effect the necessary changes.
